Warriors to host Open Men’s tourney
The Kapa’a High School boys basketball team will be hosting an Open Men’s Basketball Tournament Dec. 12-13 at the Bernice Hundley Gym, guaranteeing any team competing to play at least three games.
The Warrior team is extending an invitation to any men’s team interested in playing in the two-day tournament to attend an informational meeting this Friday, Dec. 5, starting at 6 p.m.
Coach Ed Phillips said that both pre-season tournaments have been scrubbed from the schedule, including the Waimea preseason tournament games scheduled for Dec. 4 through 6.
However, the Warriors want to play and came up with the idea of hosting community men’s teams as a fund-raiser for the team.
For more information about the meeting and location, please call 821-4445, or 821-4401, ext. 164.
Waimea grad Fukino starting in NCAA volleyball tournament
Jennifer Fukino, Waimea High School class of 2000, is the starting setter for Nicholls State University Lady Colonels.
The sixth-seeded Lady Colonels upset top-seeded and regular-season champion Texas State University in an intense three game match, to capture the 2003 Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament and the automatic bid to the 2003 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship.
This is the Lady Colonels’ first tournament championship title and first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.
About Jennifer, Coach M.J. Engstrom said, “Our offense was phenomenal due to the fact that Jennifer Fukino did a great job of mixing up our offense attack.”
The Lady Colonels will face 16th seeded Texas A&M at College Station, in the first round of Midwest Regional play on Friday.
