Frank E. Medeiros
Frank E. “Uncle Frank” Medeiros of Kapa’a, died at his home on Dec. 16, 2003 at the age of 87.
Born in Makawao, Maui on Nov. 16, 1916, he was retired from Samuel Mahelona Hospital, where he worked for 32 years in maintenance and as the boiler room operator.
He began working at Haleakala Ranch as a stable boy or ranch hand. He also worked as a ranger and in 1939 relocated to O’ahu, where he worked at Pearl Harbor from 1939 to 1945. During his employment he played semi-professional baseball as a pitcher for the Navy All Stars. He was employed as a Special Police Officer on Kaua’i in 1946 during the plantation strike before working at Mahelona.
He was well-known as “Uncle Frank” by the many youths that he coached. He coached the Catholic Youth Organization at St. Catherine’s for 13 years, and the Kawaihau Little League for three years. He was an active member of the Kawaihau Young Farmers and a UPW representative to conferences. In 1997 he was a selected by the Kaua’i Museum as a “Kaua’i Living Treasure.”
He is survived by his wife, Agnes M. Medeiros of Kapa’a; two sons, Frank R. (Mary Lou) Medeiros of Kapa’a, Collins M. (Lorna) Medeiros of Kapa’a; two daughters, Agnes Linda (James) Freitas of Kapa’a, Patricia M. Medeiros of Lihu’e; brother, John (Gloria) Medeiros of O’ahu; three sisters, Cecelia Rhodes of O’ahu; Florence Puana of O’ahu, Rosaline Fryer of O’ahu, two sisters-in-law, Delphine Medeiros of O’ahu, Roselind Medeiros of California; 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Jan. 10, from 9 to 10:40 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church. Eulogy at 10:40 a.m. with Mass to follow at 11 a.m. with Father Jim Orsini. Friends are invited to join the family for lunch at St. Catherine’s School Cafeteria.

Larry Wong
Larry Ah Chin Wong of Koloa, died at his residence on Dec. 27, 2003 at the age of 89.
He served in the Army in the South Pacific during World War II and retired from the county Department of Public Works.
He is survived by his wife, Miriam Polikapu (Mundon); daughters, Mokihana Charlotte (Roland) Ruiz, Miriam Napua (Tony) Romo, Ruth K. (Dan) Inafuku of Maili, Paula L. Wong of Manoa, and Tamara (Boone) Morrison of Volcano Village; sons, Amos Wong, Stanley (Maralani) Wong of Waipahu, O’ahu; and Lawrence Wong of Wahiawa, 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family on Jan. 8, from 8 a.m. Service to begin at 10 a.m. at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary in Koloa. Burial to follow with military honors at the Hanapepe Veterans Cemetery.
Andrew Kahokuloa
Andrew Kuuopuulaniakealoha Kahokuloa, died at Straub Clinic and Hospital on Dec. 31, 2003 at the age of 58.
Born in Waimea, on April 28, 1945, he was a rancher and field worker.
He is survived by his wife, Violet Kahokuloa of Anahola; five sons, Opuulani (Eleanani) Kahokuloa of Moloka’i, John (Pu’i) Kahokuloa of Ni’ihau, Makaio (Precious) Kahokuloa of Anahola, Wailani Kahokuloa of Anahola, Kealoha Kahokuloa of Anahola; four daughters, Pupuleinai (Kyle Masuda) Hookano of Lihu’e, Kalai (Nathaniel Rhodes, Jr.) Kahokuloa of Florida, Haunani (Nathan Pascua) Kahokuloa of Anahola, Leimomi (Kenneth) Shintani of Ni’ihau; one brother, Palenapa (Elizabeth) Kaohelaulii, Sr. of Makaweli; two sisters, Lei (Kunia) Pahulehua of Ni’ihau, Winona (Earl) Teeter of Honolulu, 14 grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Jan. 10, from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary Chapel in Koloa. Service to begin at 1 p.m. Burial to follow at the Kekaha Hawaiian Cemetery. Casual attire is suggested.

Ben Dyre, Sr.
Ben Alfred Dyre, Sr. of Kalihiwai, went home to meet his Lord on Jan. 4, 2004 at the age of 84.
Born in Boise, Idaho on Aug. 11, 1919, he was a World War II veteran and business owner in Kobe, Japan for more than 50 years.
He is survived by his wife, Sharleen of Kobe, Japan; son, Ben Alfred Dyre, Jr. of Auburn, Wash.; two daughters, April Karen Fauske of Spokane, Wash. and Holly Melinda Dyre of Kalihiwai, Kaua’i; six grandchildren, Dolly, Elliot and Otto Fauske, Pearle, Ruby and Lincoln Dyre; sister, Gloria Esther Bernacchi of Reno, Nev.
Private service to be held at Kauai Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Masae Nishi
Masae Nishi of Waimea, died at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital on Jan. 1, 2004, at the age of 92.
Born in Waimea on Dec. 17, 1909, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by a son, Dexter Nishi of Waimea; daughter, Yasue Kano of Kapa’a; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Roy (Patsy) Sakai of Lihu’e; numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were private.

Pio Pascua
Pio Ben Pascua of Kekaha, died at home on Jan. 1, 2004 at the age of 91.
Born in Santa, Ilocos Sur, Philippines on June 10, 1912, he was a retired irrigator with Kekaha Sugar Company.
He is preceded in death by parents, Meliton and Tranquilina Pascua, brother, Bienvenido; sisters, Conchita P. Javier and Laurena P. Baltero; grandson, Bonifacio Manglinong; son-in-law, Gonzalo Manglinong. He is survived by his wife, Juana Baltero Pascua; three sons, Antonio (Marlene) Pascua of Spring Valley, Calif., Mamerto (Fe) Pascua of Bensalem, Pa. and Roy (Evelyn) Pascua of Colton, Calif.; three daughters, Estelita P. Manglinong of Kekaha, Anatalia (Buddy) Arellano of Seattle, Wash., and Lucita (Roland) de Peralta of San Diego, Calif.; two brothers, Jose Pascua of Philippines and Lazaro Pascua of Philippines; three sisters, Josefina P. Aglosolos of Philippines, Espirita Pascua of Philippines and Aurelia P. Nartatez of Waipahu, O’ahu; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, at the St. Theresa Catholic Church; rosary officiated by Father Nap will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation also from 8 to 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, at the St. Theresa Catholic Church; mass officiated by Father Larry will begin at 10 a.m. Followed by burial at the church cemetery. Casual attire is suggested.

Mitsuyo Yamamoto
Mitsuyo Yamamoto of Hanapepe, died at home on Jan. 3, 2004 at the age of 77.
Born in Hanapepe, on Nov. 11, 1926, she was a retired processor with Hawaiian Fruit Packers.
She is survived by three brothers, Tsutomo (Florence) Yamamoto of Hanapepe, Tex Muneo (Jan) Yamamoto of Ha’aula, O’ahu and Thomas (Gerry) Yamamoto of Hanapepe; three sisters, Jane (Hajime) Kuribayashi of Koloa, Lois (Toshio) Hashimoto of Hanapepe and Grace (Robert) Okumura of ‘Aiea, O’ahu; brother-in-law, Gene Higa of Pahoa, Hawai’i; two sisters-in-law, Irene Yamamoto of Ontario, Calif. and Fujiko Yamamoto of Las Vegas, Nev.; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Hanapepe Honpa Hongwanji; service to begin at 11 a.m. Casual attire is suggested and flowers omitted.
