UH looking for first tennis win
MORAGA, CA. — The University of Hawai’i men’s tennis team is still seeking its first win on its week-long trip, losing to Saint Mary’s on Wednesday.
The Rainbow Warriors are still searching for their first victory of the 2003-04 campaign after dropping its first seven matches under new head coach John Nelson.
Newcomer Dalibor Ptak posted the lone UH victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Rafael Lopez in the No. 1 singles.
Three other Rainbow Warriors took their matches to three sets before losing. Sophomore Bryon Weinberg lost 7-5 in the third in his match to Andre Sion. Junior Travis Smith took a one-set lead in his match to J.J. Whitlinger at No. 6 singles, but dropped the next two, 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Burke Marold lost a third-set super-tiebreaker, 10-5 to Adam Fauvre.
The Gaels took the doubles point after the team of Vincent Leborgne and Dino Paul Ferrari rallied past UH’s Smith and Jamie Migia, 9-8 (3).
UH faces Nevada on Thursday at the timothy Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga.
Kaiola Canoe Club looking for paddlers
The Kaiola Canoe Club is currently accepting membership applications for the 2004 season. All levels of experience are welcomed.
Continuous recruitment will take place on the following days:
Youth (ages 10-18) Boys – Wednesdays and Fridays from 3 to 5 p.m.
Youth (ages 10-18) Girls – Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 5 p.m.
Women – Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5 p.m.
Men – Mondays and Wednesdays at 5 p.m.
All practices are held at the clubhouse located at the Niumalu Pavilion.

Pu’uwai Canoe Club practice
Paddling practice for Pu’uwai Canoe Club begins the first week of February.
Women’s practice begins, Monday, Feb. 2, 5:30 p.m. Regular practice days are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday (Saturday time to be announced).
Men’s practice begins, Tuesday, Feb. 3, 5:30 p.m. Regular practice days are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday (Sunday time to be announced).
Additional Novice training will be given for the months of February and March. If you have never paddled before but are interested in Outrigger Canoe Paddling this is the time to give it a try.
Practice will be held at the mount of the Wailua River. The canoe’s are located on the mountain side of the highway (about 25 feet from the road) on the Kapa’a bank of the river. We will provide all needed equipment, please feel free to give it a try. You won’t be disappointed. For more info, call Brian at 635-6311.
