Frank E. “Uncle Frank” Medeiros of Kapa’a, died at his home on Dec. 16, 2003 at the age of 87.
Born in Makawao, Maui on Nov. 16, 1916 he was retired from Mahelona Hospital where he worked for 32 years in maintenance and boiler room operator.
He began working at Haleakala Ranch as a stable boy and ranch hand. He also worked as a ranger and in 1939 relocated to O’ahu where he worked at Pearl Harbor from 1939 to 1945. During his employment he played semi-professional baseball as a pitcher for the “Navy All Stars.” He was employed as a Special Police Officer on Kaua’i in 1946 during the plantation strike before working at Mahelona.
He was well-known as “Uncle Frank” by the many youths that he coached. He coached the Catholic Youth Organization at St. Catherine’s for 13 years. He also coached the Kawaihau Little League for three years. He was an active member of the Kawaihau Young Farmers and a UPW representative to conferences. In 1997 he was a selected by the Kaua’i Museum as a “Kaua’i Living Treasure.”
He is survived by his wife, Agnes M. Medeiros of Kapa’a; two sons, Frank R. (Mary Lou) Medeiros of Kapa’a, Collins M. (Lorna) Medeiros of Kapa’a; two daughters, Agnes Linda (James) Freitas of Kapa’a, Patricia M. Medeiros of Lihu’e; brother, John (Gloria) Medeiros of O’ahu; three sisters, Cecelia Rhodes of O’ahu; Florence Puana of O’ahu, Rosaline Fryer of O’ahu, two sisters-in-law, Delphine Medeiros of O’ahu, Roselind Medeiros of California; 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Jan. 10, 9 to 10:40 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church. Eulogy at 10:40 a.m. with Mass to follow at 11 a.m. with Father Jim Orsini. Friends are invited to join the family for lunch at St. Catherine’s School Cafeteria.
