LIHU’E — As if there wasn’t enough construction business on Kaua’i, some residents will be heading to Canada to work on a hotel-renovation project.
Pacific International, Inc. (PII), a construction management company with a regional office in Lihu’e, will help provide manpower for the multi-million-dollar renovation of the Regal Constellation Hotel in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
PII, with headquarters in Scottsdale, Ariz., has regional offices in Seattle, Washington and Frankfurt, Germany in addition to Kaua’i, and its leaders will head up the construction portion of the renovation project.
In addition to people from his own organization, PII President and Chief Executive Officer John Dunatov expects between two and three subcontractors on Kaua’i to be sent to Toronto to take part in the first phase of the project which will be finished by the middle of 2005.
“We are mobilizing staff for the project, and could have approximately 20 to 25 people from the island in Toronto for the first phase of the project,” said Dunatov.
According to Dunatov, Kauai Fire Protection Inc., has subcontracted with PII for the project.
“Kauai Fire is absolutely a player in this, and we are interested in two or three others,” he said. “This is a major opportunity for people here.”
Kauai Fire owner Guy Menor is excited about the project.
“I am very happy with the chance to go up there (to Toronto) and do some work.”
The 850-room hotel project will include the full renovation of all guest rooms, 90,000 square feet of meeting facilities and 50,000 square feet of public spaces and restaurants.
The project will take place in a location in close proximity to the city’s airport, and will begin in several weeks.
Frank Orenstein, a long-time client with PII, is one of the owners and management directors of the Regal Constellation Hotel.
“It’s a major repositioning project at the Toronto Airport,” said Orenstein. “We have had a great working relationship with them (PII), so we have a lot of confidence in what they can do.”
PII has completed 17 hotel renovations over the past 10 years for Orenstein’s properties.
