“Ten Times Healthier Babies” project registration open now
A March of Dimes community grant is making more prenatal classes and events available for families living in West Kaua’i. The lack of birth classes available for women in South and West Kaua’i, and the need for extra services for pregnant women, prompted staff at KVMH to apply for a March of Dimes grant to meet this need.
Increasing numbers of women are choosing the Family Birthing Center at West Kauai Medical Center, which means a growing need for teachers and classes on the west side to prepare them for labor and delivery.
Prenatal education for women includes “Food and Fun” events where pregnant women gather for dinner, share stories, and learn about nutrition, stress reduction and prevention of preterm or premature labor. The next “Food and Fun” date is Jan. 22 at 5 p.m.
Free childbirth classes are available to pregnant women, regardless of doctor, income, or health insurance. The classes will be offered on a continuing basis throughout the year on a space-available basis. Reservations are required for the classes, which are held on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. in conference room C at West Kauai Medical Center in Waimea.
The classes include Bradley, ASPO La Maze and other helpful training to make childbirth easier for women and their partners. Couples should wear casual, comfortable clothes and bring pillows or cushions to sit on for extra comfort. The next class begins on Jan. 20. Space is still available.
Additional classes will be scheduled based on need. Pregnant women are invited to call and reserve a class appropriate for their baby’s expected birth date.
For more information, call 335-0579, Virginia, or call 338-9431, and leave your name and number with Cheryl. Space is limited.
The March of Dimes raises funding for these projects through community participation in the events such as WalkAmerica, coming up on March 27.
