KAPA‘A — Kaua‘i High School’s Jesse Slade notched a game-high 20 points to lead the Red Raider JV boys basketball team to a 57-50 rise over the Kapa‘a JV program Friday night at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
A trey from Kapa‘a’s Angelo Luna combined with a pair of field goals each from Kapena Cummings and Mike Lindsey as the Junior Warriors finished a 14-5 first quarter before the Raiders answered in the second stanza.
Outgunning Kapa‘a 20-9, the Junior Raiders took a 10-point lead into the locker rooms with Chad Nonaka and Slade leading the charge, Nonaka ripping one from three-pointland and a field goal while Slade added four buckets to the ante.
The Red Raider JV defense limited the Warriors to three double-digit scorers led by Junnel Calpito who finished with 14 points including a trey in the final quarter as the Warriors scrambled to get back in the hunt.
Cummings finished with a dozen points and Lindsey wrapped up the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
On the Raider side of the card, Nonaka finished with 11 points while Jordan Cox and Brendon Young each contributed seven and six points respectively in addition to their value in scraping up rebounds and bulling the inside.
Kapa‘a will head to Waimea as the KIF basketball season enters its final week.
Kapa‘a will play Waimea on Tuesday, Feb. 10 with the JV game tipping off at 5 :30 p.m.
