Pine Trees Classic on Valentine’s Day
The Irons Brothers’ 3rd Annual Pine Trees Classic will be limited to the first 102 entries, and is scheduled to run on Feb. 14-15 starting at 7:30 a.m. through 5:30 p.m.
There is no entry fee for this event, but is closed to the Top 6 Rated Surfers as ranked by the HSF or the NSSA.
Age limit is from 14 years old and Under in the following divisions:
Girls 10-Under, Girls 11-14.
Boys 8-Under (Push In OK), Boys 9-10, Boys 11-12, Boys 13-14, and Boys 24 Invites.
Entry blanks are available at Kai Kanes, Hanalei Surf Co., Tamba’s, Progressive Expressions, Miura Store/deja vu, and Nukumois.
12U Boys light up Kilauea, Kalaheo
Silas Tacsiat posted a game-high 13 points as Simao got past the Enforcers, 41-36 in the county’s 12 Under boys basketball game played Monday night at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center.
Derin Lopes led the enforcers with 9 points in the loss.
Kausi Lomu topped Wailua’s scoring with 14 points in their win over Lihu‘e, 41-27, Devon Florence showing 10 points for Lihu‘e in the second game played at Kilauea.
Out in Kalaheo, Kilauea Black Dragons’ Arnal Tangonan outgunned the Westside Hornets with seven points, but the Hornets swarmed over the Dragons, 34-17, K. Dela Cruz, B. Agu, and V.J. Carnino leading the Hornets with six points apiece.
Kyle Van Buskirk lit up the boards for 15 points to lead the Eastside win over Waimea 2nd to None, 27-25, Waimea getting their boost from Dayton Bayot’s eight points.
BYUH gains ground
LAIE, HI. n- The Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i men’s basketball team climbed another three spots in the Division II Bulletin national rankings released Tuesday.
The Seasiders moved up to number 15 after last week’s defeat of Hawai‘i Pacific raised their overall record to 16-2. The Seasiders have won 15 straight games, tying the school record for consecutive victories, and have not lost since losing at Colorado State in November. The Seasiders have not lost to a Division II team yet this season.
BYU-Hawai‘i also continues to be among the nation’s statistical leaders, first nationally in field goal percentage (53.2), 17th in free throw percentage (74.8), and 23rd in three-point percentage (40.4). BYU-Hawai‘i also ranks 28th nationally in scoring margin at 11.4 points per game.
Sophomore guard Shawn Opunui tops the nation three-point shooting accuracy with 56.0 percent and is 22nd in three-pointers made per game with 3.1. He also ranks tied for 35th in free throw percentage at 85.9.
Junior center Jake Chrisman holds down the 24th spot nationally in scoring average with 20.8 points per game and senior Beau Nobmann is tied for 31st in steals with 2.45 per game.
Sophomore Austin Smylie, although he has not shot enough to qualify for the field goal percentage leadership, would rank 28th nationally with his field goal percentage of 58.5 if he shot more often.
