NAWILIWILI — The Nawiliwili Yacht Club’s first race in the 10-race Feature Boat Series kicked off on Valentine’s Day with seven sailboats making the trek from Nawiliwili Harbor to Ahukini and back.
Due to Kona winds, the race started from the opposite direction with sailboats maneuvering through an assortment of boats anchored in the harbor.
The 8.4-mile race was graced with beautiful weather conditions with steady wind ranging from 17 to 21 knots under sunny skies, the race getting injected with excitement as gusts exceeding 25 knots punctuated the upwind leg.
Multi-hulls led the pack with the trimaran Meschach coming in first followed by the catamaran Malihini.
The first place monohull Malia, a Gene Wells original, came in third overall.
Malihini is the yacht club’s first Feature Boat for the 2004 racing season, and pictures of the boat and its crew can be seen on the web at http://www.nawiliwiliyachtclub.org/.
