UH Hilo’s Griffin Player of the Week
HILO, HI — University of Hawai‘i at Hilo guard Justin Griffin has been selected as the Pacific West Conference Player of the Week.
The 6-foot-4 junior averaged just under 20 points a game for the week in three Vulcan victories.
Griffin scored a season-high 27 points on Saturday to help UH Hilo come back from a 13-point halftime deficit against Montana State-Billings.
He has scored in double figures in the Vulcans’ last five games, averaging 17.6 points per game over that stretch.
He ranks 14th in the PWC in scoring (12.5), 6th in free throw percentage (82.2), 14th in 3-point percentage (34.3), and 10th for blocked shots (0.64).
County 14U boys hoops start
Two games in Kilauea and a pair of games at Kalaheo heralded the start of the county’s 14 Under boys basketball season Monday night.
Justin Ramos chalked up 10 points to lead the Breakaway to a 42-10 showing over Kapa‘a in the first game played at Kilauea, Brian Gerardo netting seven of Kapa‘a’s 10 points.
Halen Medina scored 13 points to lead Wailua to a 54-34 win over Kilauea, Parker Blaylock finishing with 10 points for Kilauea.
Vincent Vea picked up nine points to lead the Hornets to a 31-29 edge over Waimea who saw Tyson Wilson and Joshua Yanos each net seven points in the effort.

6th Annual Martial Arts tournament
Kauai’s Sixth Annual Martial Arts Championship Friendship Tournament will be held on Sunday, March 14, 2004 at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center. This year in addition to Gracie Longman Jui Jitsu Tournament Kenn Firestone Universal Karate of Kauai is also a sponsor. This event was originally created for Kauai competitors who could not travel to tournaments, but has evolved to attract competitors from outer islands as well as the mainland. BYUH tennis women win 71st
LAIE, O‘ahu — The top-ranked Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i defeated Chaminade on Monday, 9-0, losing a total of just five games along the way. The Seasiders, defending NCAA II national champions lost one game in the doubles portion of the competition, and just four games in the six singles matches in cruising to their 71st consecutive victory.
Jing Jing Liu, Gurianna Korinihona, Hana Chovanova, and Crystal Schwenke led the Seasiders with 6-0, 6-0 wins at the first, third, fifth, and sixth singles slots. In doubles play, Anna Lewis and Korinihona won 8-0 at number two doubles, as did Chovanova and trisha Piercy at the number three position.
The Seasider women take on NCAA II Long Beach State in Laie on Thursday, Feb. 26.
