HANAPEPE – Entering their final game at Hanapepe Stadium, there was a mission on the minds of the Kaua‘i High School junior varsity girls soccer team – keep the record perfect!
Head coach Glenn Morita said that he did not realize the girls were unscored upon until checking the records in the second half of the season.
“We are 6-0, and no one has scored on us,” he said following their 3-0 shutout of Waimea Saturday to finish with an unblemished record.
Darci Murata and Tahnee Shigematsu headed up a defensive effort that kept their opponents at bay while alleviating the pressure on the Red Raider goalies KC Gaitos and Tamlyn Hasegawa.
Murata has been a vocal leader on defense despite her being a freshman while Shigematsu relied on her physical play and speed to stop scoring attempts.
Morita noted that during the season that concluded Saturday night, the combined total of shots taken by both Kapa‘a and Waimea comes close to what the
Red Raiders do in a single game.
Concluding his second year as coach for the JV Red Raiders, Morita said he can’t recall any team in the KIF finishing with no goals scored against them.
Members of the 6-0 Red Raiders JV girls team include Corey Mann, Allison Arakaki, Katie Anderson, Natasha Arakaki, Natasha Pigao, Kassy Morishige, Murata, Auwika Muragin, Jacey Ageno, Reina Fujimoto, Kristen Shim, Shigematsu, Krystal-Carrie Gaitos, Megan Vento, Codie Yamauchi, Stacey Terry, Hasegawa, Cherisse Rapozo, and Clarissa Bulosan. Ashley Espiritu is the team manager, Suzanne Evra is the assistant coach, and Matt Victor, the volunteer coach.
