The Kamehameha-O’ahu Girls’ Soccer team took the Balwin girls High School Soccer Classic on Maui recently, the services of Mari Punzal, 14, a starting freshmen from Kaua’i scoring the winning goal in the first half of the championship game against Iolani to help Kamehameha win the title game, 1-0.
A total of 14 teams from Maui and O’ahu took part in the tournament including Castle, Kaiser, McKinley, Mililani, and Pearl City.
Maui teams included host Baldwin, Kamehameha-Maui, King Kekaulike, Lahainaluna, Maui High, St. Anthony, and Seabury.
Prior to the soccer season, Mari, the daughter of Eugene and Laurie Punzal of Kapa’a, captained the Kamehameha JV “White” volleyball team, playing as an outside hitter.
Another Kaua’i girl, Chanel, the daughter of Craig and Renee Kawakami of Lihu’e, also played on the JV “White” team as a back row specialist.
The JV “White” finished second in the ILH Volleyball standings.
