A typical day for Kelly Perozo at Princeville Ranch Hike & Kayak tour company is busy to say the least.
She starts at 8 a.m. with a four-hour, 3.5-mile hiking tour before beginning another at 1 p.m.
And they aren’t casual walks in the park.
“It’s usually pretty muddy and wet out there,” said Perozo.
Having worked at the tour company for a little over a year, Perozo is well aware that the business is tough, fun, and physically taxing.
So she doesn’t have time to worry about her nails, or if a few strands of hair are out of place.
Of course, Perozo does care about her appearance and, when a special event does come up, she wants to be ready to look her best.
That’s why she was eager to participate in “Nature Knockout,” a makeover show created by The Learning Channel.
Perozo and former company colleague Melissa Kent were chosen to participate in the program, which was filmed on Kaua‘i and will air today, Wednesday, Feb. 18, at noon. TLC is channel 71 on Oceanic Time Warner Cable on Kaua‘i.
“We thought it would be a lot of fun to do,” said Perozo. “I have always been the type that didn’t use makeup or worry too much about cutting my hair.”
According to Perozo, TLC producers last year approached owners of the kayak and hiking company about doing the show. TLC officials asked owners of the tour company to choose two guides who would want the makeover.
Perozo and Kent were chosen, and the makeover was done at Shear Elegance beauty salon in Hanalei.
“It went really well,” said Jamie Devorre, a receptionist at the salon. “They never had their hair colored before, so they were a little nervous.”
Professionals (Dayna Santos, Lori Nichols and Christie Thomson) at the beauty salon cut and colored the women’s hair, and applied makeup. The Learning Channel stylists provided the clothing.
“I liked it,” said Perozo. “It was really different. It was kind of high-maintenance, but it was something that I could do.”
Once the makeovers were complete, the duo were shipped off to the Sheraton Kauai Resort in Po‘ipu, where friends and family members got to see their new looks.
“I think they were impressed,” said Perozo, who hasn’t seen an advanced copy of the program but is eagerly anticipating today’s broadcast.
Despite the new looks, Perozo isn’t about to change her personality.
“I definitely liked the look,” she said. “I know now that if there is a certain event that I need to dress up for, I can do it.”
