I regularly read your paper with great interest and suggest that anyone wanting to relocate to Kaua‘i or anywhere should read a local paper for a month or so to get a real feel of what is going on behind and beyond the tourist business.
Your article this date (2/5/04) regarding the rise of home prices on Kaua‘i could be expanded to explain how anyone who lives on the island full time can afford to buy a home there.
Certainly not from local employment.
Unless there are 2 or 3 fully employed adults per household, only a bare subsistence is likely.
Are these homes actually single family, all-year residences or are they being built for time share purposes?
What is the average per capita income of Kaua‘i’s permanent, year-round residents?
Why in the world are there so few skilled, professional jobs available on Kaua‘i?
Can you please update the several stories you have done on the homeless situation on Kaua‘i?
How is the project coming along to provide low-income housing in Kapa‘a?
What is the length of the permit for sleeping on the beach and in parks?
Personally, I have shelved my notions of retiring in Kaua‘i.
I can visit Jamaica for less money and not have to witness fellow Americans living below the poverty line for the privilege of waiting hand and foot on tourists.
Shameful.
I would be embarrassed to own an expensive property there under such circumstances.
