HANAPEPE — Host Waimea High School split their opening into their tournament, dropping to the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders, 18-9, but then rebounding against Kailua, 4-2 in the afternoon game at Hanapepe Stadium.
The win moves Waimea to the feature game Saturday as they tangle with Mid-Pacific Institute starting at 2:30 p.m.
Mid Pacific took Waianae 8-1 in the second day of the 21st Annual Waimea High School Invitational Baseball Tournament to relegate Waianae against Kailua starting at 1 p.m.
Back at the Waimea High School field, Leilehua downed the Kapa‘a Warriors 6-4, moving the Warriors into a battle with the Menehune starting at 8:30 a.m. and Leilehua going up against Kaua‘i starting at 10:30 a.m.
Using timely hitting, and the pitching of Michael Yaris, Waimea picked up all four of their runs against Kailua in the first half of their encounter as Leonard Zalopany scored Michael Ishibashi on a single in the first frame.
Ishibashi singled in the second and crossed the plate on a Shawn Yadao sacrifice fly to left for the second mark with Isaac Castillo driving home the second run in the second inning on a double.
Ishibashi rounded out the scoring in the third frame with an RBI sacrifice to right.
All Saturday games will be played at the Hanapepe Stadium.
