14U boys hoops light up Kalaheo, Kilauea
Vincent Vea netted 11 points to lead the Westside Hornets to a 41-39 edge over Wailua who got 13 points from Matt Lindsey as the county’s 14 Under boys basketball league played two games Monday night at Kalaheo.
Brandon Young finished with eight points to lead the Rebels who squeaked by the Lihu‘e Breakaway, 38-36 in the second game played at Kalaheo.
Basil Walton finished with 10 points to lead the Breakaway.
Games were also played at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center where the Lihu‘e Lakers nudged Kilauea, 35-30 behind 14 points from Baron Marshall.
Kaimana Fu led the Kilauea effort with a game-high 17 points.
Kapa‘a topped Motiv 8, 30-20 in the second contest behind nine points from C. Daelsen, Motiv 8 getting their lead from Chance Bukoski who finished with eight points.
Kennelly upset
GOLD COAST, Aus. — Keala Kennelly (Haw) lost a nail-biting round three battle with newcomer Laurina McGrath (NSW, Aus) at the 2004 women’s World Championship Tour (WCT) Roxy Pro presented by Boost Mobile.
McGrath, who had only qualified for the 2004 WCT earlier this year earned her spot by winning a four-way surf off for the ASP Injury Wildcard position.
Kennelly was the 2003 world title runner-up.
McGrath will face another former world #2, Jacqueline Silva (Brz) in the quarterfinals after Silva eliminated Sofia Mulanovich.
Defending Roxy Pro winner Layne Beachley (NSW, Aus) took command of higher scoring sets to get past wildcard Lisa Andersen (FL, USA) in one of the anticipated heats of the day.
Maria Tita Tavares (Brz) was another round three stand out, defeating world #3 Heather Clark (SAfr).
Melanie Redman-Carr (WA. Aus) took the day’s highest combined two-wave score of 18.6 which included a near-perfect 9.9 in round one.
Palos Verdes coming to Kaua‘i
Palos Verdes Peninsula High School is the latest commitment to take part in the Kaua‘i Challenge 2004 volleyball tournament coming up later this year.
The tournament, featuring teams from all three of Kaua‘i’s public high schools has also attracted teams from Roosevelt High School, the 2002 Kaua‘i Challenge champions, and ranked 5th following the states tournament.
Pearl City High School, Taft High School from Oregon, Iowa A and Iowa B teams have already committed for this year’s tournament.
The Kaua‘i High School is the 2003 Kaua‘i Challenge champions and is ranked 7th following the states.
Palos Verdes finished second in the Bay League behind Mira Costa, with South Torrance in third place followed by Redondo in fourth.
Team members of Palos Verdes draw from the following clubs – Mizuno Long Beach, SCVC, Hot Shots, South Bay, Surfside, Big Dogs, and Club Performance.
