Golf coming to BYUH
LA‘IE, O‘ahu — Ken Wagner, athletic director for the Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i, announced Wednesday that the school will be adding men’s and women’s golf to the athletic program of the university here.
Wagner said, “We’re excited about offering men’s and women’s golf. It’s an ideal fit for Hawai‘i, and for our area here in La‘ie.” Wagner is also very excited about the Seasiders’ new home course at Turtle Bay.
“We feel very fortunate that the Turtle Bay Golf and Tennis Resort has agreed to be our home course. We think we’ll have the finest home course of any college in the country,” he said. Turtle Bay is located just a few minutes away from the BYU-Hawai‘i campus, and is home to two of the finest courses in Hawai‘i.
With the addition of men’s and women’s golf, BYU-Hawai‘i will now have ten varsity sports including men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s volleyball, women’s softball, men’s basketball, and men’s water polo.
The additions to the program became necessary when the NCAA raised its minimum requirement for participating schools from eight to ten sports.
BYU-Hawai‘i plans to name a head coach for the two new sports in the near future.

Seasider basketball No. 2 in NCAA II
LA‘IE, O‘ahu — The Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i men’s basketball team held steady at second in the West Region in the NCAA II Regional Poll released Wednesday.
This week’s poll is the final poll of the season with the NCAA handing out bids for the regional tournament on Sunday.
The top eight teams in the regions, as determined by the regional committee on Sunday, will receive bids to the regional tournament. BYUH clinched a berth in the regional tournament by winning the Pacific West Conference title, the winner getting an automatic berth in the tournament.
The Seasiders, 21-5 on the season and 11-3 in the conference, qualified for the tournament for the third year in a row and for the fourth time since joining NCAA II play in the 1998-99 season. BYUH hosted the regional tournament last season.
The tournament host for this year’s tournament will not be determined until Sunday, but it appears that Cal State-San Bernardino will host for the second time in three years.
The tournament will be held Mar. 12-15.
Only one other Pac West team, University of Hawai‘i-Hilo, holds a spot in the regional top ten at the ninth position, but the Vulcans still have a shot at the regional tournament based on the outcome of this week’s games.
