WAILUA — There was no lightning so play went on as scheduled at the Wailua Golf Course as the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders swept both the boys and girls event at the KIF Golf opener Saturday.
The blustery weather conditions that forced the cancellation of some events and created havoc at other sporting events did not deter the golfers, or their supporters from turning out at Wailua as the golfers and their coaches prepared for the season-ending states competition that will be held at the Wailua GC later this Spring.
“There’s a lot of golfers who turned out this year,” noted parent Lynn Netzer whose son Brett plays for the Red Raiders. “Kapa‘a had a lot of players out today, and it’s nice to see so many of the Waimea boys out, too.”
“And, the parent support is really good, too,” Netzer noted. “In spite of the weather, there’re a lot of them out on the course (following their student golfers).”
Chad Nonaka drew comments of the quality of his putting at the ninth hole topped the field, finishing the day at 73, crossed with a 37, a stroke back of front-nine leader Jordan Cox.
Cory French, who crossed at 38, a stroke back of Nonaka came in with a 74 despite the inclement weather for second place, tying Kula School’s Sean Ogawa who shared identical scores with French.
Markland Soliva topped the field of Waimea golfers whose numbers totaled ten of their 11-member squad playing Saturday. Solvia finished the day at 88 (43-45), five strokes better than Thad Fujii (48-45).
Billy Toy topped the Kapa‘a field of six (of their eight-member team) golfers with 79.
Freshman golfer Miki Ueoka topped the Red Raider girls, finishing at 74 after picking up the lead in the front nine and holding on throughout the day, finishing three strokes ahead of Kii Matsuyoshi.
Robyn Nakata led the Menehune girls with 94.
Team scores saw Kaua‘i sweep both the girls and boys competition finishing at 234 and 305 respectively.
Kapa‘a boys finished second in team play at 339 followed by the Menehune at 352.
This week’s golf will take place at the Kaua‘i Lagoons, Mokihana Course with the first grouping going off starting at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
