LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School girls and boys tennis teams were victorious over Kula High School at the Ala Lani Tennis Club and Spa courts at Kaua‘i Lagoons Saturday while at the Hanapepe Tennis Courts, the Menehune wahine prevailed over visiting Kapa‘a.
Kaua‘i girls blanked the Kula team as Lezlie Tao came back from a 2-5 second set to complete a win over Ariel Carlson, 6-2, 7-5 in the girls first singles, joining Megan Vento who defeated Moana Ferry to earn the second singles.
The team of Jaymee Wakumoto and Katie Anderson downed Danielle Hoen and Eve Lampenfeld, 6-1, 6-0 in the girls first doubles with Chelsea Yamase and Alyssa Miyake victorious over Diane Sater and Alex Pond, 6-1, 6-0 for the second doubles. Kula forfeited the girls third doubles for the Red Raider sweep in girls.
In the boys matches, Kaua‘i emerged with a 4-1 win, Kula’s Alex Latif downing James Odan, 6-0, 6-1 to capture the boys second singles, Kula’s only win.
Jordan Kukino battled Kyle Barrett, 6-0, 6-2 for the boys first singles while the Raider team of Chad Naganuma and Ronald Hosaka defeated Kibo Smith and Kai Anderson, 6-0, 6-0 for the first doubles.
Kaua‘i’s Brysen Hosaka and Tyler Inouye teamed to take Kai Jure and Michael Mijares, 6-0, 6-3 for the boys second doubles, and Paris Mackey and Chris Webster bettered Makai Ferry and Matt Vinsko, 6-4, 6-4 for the boys third doubles.
Out at the Hanapepe Tennis Courts, Waimea took the three girls doubles matches to come out 3-2 over Kapa‘a Saturday.
Kapa‘a’s Crystine Ito defeated Sonya Tacub, 6-3, 6-2 for the girls first singles followed by Tasha Haraguchi getting past Mitzi Seto 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 for the girls second singles.
Waimea’s team of Reiko Ayabe and Jenny Morita defeated Shawna Tamayose and Ashley Valjieja, 6-3, 6-2 to earn the girls first doubles with Ciera Sherman teaming with Kristine Sison to defeat Jaclyn Filippe and Julie Yoshida, 6-4, 6-3 for the second doubles.
Tori Kagawa and Sara Nonaka teamed to defeat Carrie Esaki and Erin O’Shaugnessey, 6-0, 6-0 for the girls third doubles.
In consolation matches, Kapa‘a swept Waimea as Jaclyn Filippe and Julie Yoshida got past Jenny rumbaoa and Ashley Shimono, 8-5 and the team of Mohala Johnson and Julie Yoshida defeating Kelsi Naumu and Sharla Shimono, 8-6.
Ashley Valvieja and Erin O’Shaugnessey teamed to defeat Erna Agmata and Taira Kajiwara, 8-6 in the final consolation match of the day.
On Saturday, Apr. 17, Island School will travel to Hanalei to meet up with Kula while Kaua‘i heads down to the Kiahuna Tennis Courts for a noon matchup against Kapa‘a.
