MANA — For the Wayne Costa family, the third race of the Garden Island Racing Association drag races held on Easter Sunday was a family affair as dad Wayne filled in the runner-up position of the Destination Autoworks Pro ET class while sons Calvin and Sheldon finished the day in a stalemate in the Junior ET division.
Wayne Costa’s Camaro sponsored by D & W Services clocked a 9.17 quarter mile run reaching speeds of 148.51 mph to place second to Chris Loew who, despite having a new Las Vegas racing shirt, opted for his old “good luck” shirt to run his ‘69 Chevelle 402 big block sponsored by Speedie Lube and Pennzoil.
Loew reacted with a reaction time of .534 and ran a 12.40 against his dial-in time of 12.25 to take the class, his yellow Chevelle clocking speeds of 108.17 mph.
Steve Shioi took the King Auto Center Super Street ET in his 2002 Tacoma turbo-charged pickup, running a 14.76 against his dial-in 14.40 at 91.65 mph.
Shandon Takayama filled in the runner-up slot of that class in his ‘69 Z28, running a 12.19 against his 12.21 dial-in at 111.10 mph.
Joshua Peralta took the Street ET class with his 2003 Honda Civic, running a 16.44 against his 16.28 dial-in at 81.97 mph. Nestor Cabatan took the runner-up pole with his 2000 Honda Accord V6 clocking a 16.55 at 77.31 mph.
Jay-R Smith topped the Bike Class on his 10-second Suzuki 1300 Hayabusa.
The next scheduled race will be a night race held on Saturday, May 1 with the gates opening at noon.
