LIHU‘E – It was green versus white, but there could only be one winner.
The Kapa‘a High School football team kicked off its season with a competitive, yet fun, and evaulative spring football game Friday night at Vidinha Stadium.
Head coach Wes Kaui brought his troops in to gauge his team’s talent pool utilizing the University of Hawai‘i’s scoring system.
15 plays were allotted for each of the four quarters. On defense, an incomplete pass measured one point and two points were awarded for a pass deflected, a sack, and to stop the run play for no gain or a loss.
A fumble recovery was worth four points, a defensive touchdown got seven points, and an interception topped the scoring list with a 25-point count.
On offense, two points were awarded for a rushing play of four yards or more, a completion, and a run of 10 yards after the catch. A touchdown was worth its usual seven points, but if the TD was longer than 35 yards, then it was worth double (14).
Starting on defense were juniors Aaron Merle and Leonel Calvan and seniors Adrian Agaran and Falcon Valeria as defensive backs. Seniors Brian Dano, Scottie Albers, Amini Taufoou, and Matthew Roman were the linebackers. Defensive linemen were juniors Nathaniel Langi, Donald Pageldorf, and Calen Tagawa.
On the offensive side, the starters were at quarterback, senior Bronson Yadao, senior wide receivers Ward Mikami and Kaulana Kaye. Starting runningbacks were seniors, Lot Sarsona, Derek Saiki, and Lance Taniguchi-Fu. On the offensive line, the Warriors started seniors Justin Torio, Russell Morita, Tyrus Tupou, Jarasen Jaramillo, and Moses Punzal.
The final score, although not really important, was in favor of the green team with a 61-37 advantage over the white squad.
