LIHU‘E — Rhoda Libre, one of the evening’s hostesses, explained that Poliahu is the snow goddess during the time when it was believed that there was snow on Mount Wai‘ale‘ale.
It was Poliahu that Jaelyn Caminos depicted during her hula rendition in the Talent Phase Saturday night that took her on the road towards being named the Miss Kaua‘i Filipina, 2004 in the 46th annual scholarship pageant held at the convention hall.
The hula described Poliahu’s relationship with Aiwohikapua and edged out other hula numbers after overcoming technical difficulties.
Caminos, a graduate of Kapa‘a High School, took two of the three scoring divisions Saturday night as she topped the swimsuit competition as well as the talent phase. She also was deemed the Most Photogenic to round out her special awards enroute to her coronation as the new queen.
Aspiring to pursue a career in management and entertainment, Caminos is planning to attend the University of Nevada-Las Vegas in the Fall. She is the daughter of Jason Caminos and Sheri Travaso.
Jean Juliano, a graduate of Kaua‘i High School, was named as the First Princess and would assume the role of Miss Kaua‘i Filipina should Caminos be successful in her bid as Miss Hawai‘i Filipina in July at a pageant scheduled to be held on Maui.
Juliano captured the Best in Terno Speech phase for her presentation on how she would become involved in attaining world peace, her presentation involving past Filipino heroes and incorporating their influence in the lives of people today. She was also named Miss Popularity based on her ticket sales.
Samantha Sasan who rendered a medley of Polynesian dances ranging from Tahitian to contemporary hula, was named Miss Popularity in ad sales enroute to earning the crown of Second Princess.
Apryle Balaan was crowned Miss Pearl of the Orient, 2004, with Kendra Gallardo rounding out the evening as Miss Bayanihan, 2004.
Gallardo took the Most Beautiful Terno for her creation of the formal Filipino gown, and was also voted the most congenial by the field of five contestants.
Outgoing queen Jamianne Ganaden exited masterfully with a special hula rendition featuring the vocal talents of 2003 Hawai‘i Stars winner Troy Lazaro as she performed “To Become Hawai‘i” followed by a special number where she was joined by her hula sisters of Halau Ka Lei Mokihana ‘O Leina‘ala under the direction of kumu Leina‘ala Pavao.
David Bice of FM97 served as Libre’s co-host with a panel of judges that included Michael Tresler, Helen Sina, former KPD chief Brian Fujiuchi, Cathy Shanks, and Roy Nishida. Deborah Christian of Shimanuki and Matsumura served as pageant auditor with Nancy Apalla and Oliver Agcaoili doing the terno juding.
