The Kilauea Shell gas station is being expanded as a result of the area’s growing needs.
When the station reopens in two months, it will have grown from one to three islands, and will offer six gas dispensers instead of two.
“One dispenser didn’t fulfill our capacity,” said Dennis Makiya, vice president of Big Save, a local grocery-store chain which owns the Shell station along with a second Shell station in Kapa‘a near the Kapa‘a Big Save.
Plans for the expansion had been in the works since 1995, Makiya said. Expanded gas operations are expected to drive more customers into the connected Menehune Food Mart and Subway store, Makiya said.
Operation hours for the convenience store and sandwich shop will not be affected by the construction.
The construction work is being performed by Craig Kawakami Builders.
