TYesterday was the filing deadline for those seeking elected office, and three Kauaians have filed papers to run for the state Board of Education seat representing Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau.
That seat will be vacated later this year by Sherwood Hara of Hanapepe, who decided not to seek re-election.
Among the three who have filed papers to run in the race for the Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau BOE seat are Margaret “Maggie” Cox, a retired school principal of King Kaumuali‘i Elementary School and Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School; William F. Georgi of Kalaheo; and Dr. Mitsugi Nakashima of Kalaheo, a retired superintendent of Kaua‘i schools for the state Department of Education.
First Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Craig A. De Costa will become the next county prosecutor, running unopposed for that four-year term.
De Costa will replace outgoing Prosecutor Mike Soong, who announced he will not seek re-election to enter private practice and spend more time with his family.
In the 14th House District race, Hermina “Mina” Morita, D-North Kaua‘i, will square off against Republican challenger Mamo Cummings, president of the Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce.
The district is from Ha‘ena to Wailua Houselots.
In the 15th House District race, state Rep. Ezra Kanoho, a Democrat who has held his post for 18 years, will be challenged by John Hoff, a Republican and Lawa‘i resident, and John F. Friedman of Kapa‘a.
The district runs from Wailua to Lawa‘i.
In the 16th House District race, Kawakami, D-West Kaua‘i-Ni‘ihau, also filed papers, along with Republican challenger JoAnne S. Georgi of Kalaheo.
