The first-ever “Ho‘okulaia” Hawaiian cultural arts celebration will launch the 20th annual for Koloa Plantation Days.
With Ho‘okulaia, artisans will share Hawaiian culture and arts with demonstrations, exhibits and hula.
The event will take place at the Sheraton Kauai’s Luau Lawn, Garden Lobby and Terrace starting at noon until 9 p.m.
Sheraton Kauai previously hosted the popular “Sunset Ho‘olaule‘a” block party, which is being replaced this year by this Hawaiian cultural celebration that will feature hula and craft demonstrations. The hotel organizers announced they wanted to “focus more on the rich Hawaiian cultural arts that we have and to share it with local residents and visitors alike.
With the assistance of Kauai Mokihana Festival, Sheraton Kauai is proud to be the host of this event.” There is no admission charge and free shuttle service is available from the parking lots at Kiahuna Golf Course and Po‘ipu Beach Park.
“They wanted to try something different … It’s really different from things that are offered during Koloa Plantation Days,” one event organizer said.
The event starts at noon with Hawaiian cultural demonstrations and displays to include coconut weaving, kukui nut bracelets, lauhala weaving, poi pounding, Hawaiian salt preparation, wood carving, hula skirts, quilt displays, Ni‘ihau shell lei collections and other Hawaiian collections and demonstrations.
From 2 to 9 p.m., there will be performances by selected hula halau including Na Hui O Kamakaokalani, Ka Ipu Ha’a O Kekauilani, Halau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai, Halau Kahelelani, Rohotu, Healani’s Hula Halau and Halau Hula O Hali‘ileo.
Kumu Nathan Kalama and Nani Rogers will serve as the evening emcees.
The event will also have food and beverage booths throughout the day. Event-goers are asked not to bring outside food or drink. There will be tables and chairs available for seating in the lawn, but mats and small chairs may be brought in for seating.
