Galloping into the arena on horseback at full speed with music blaring and flags flying, the Kaua‘i All-Girls Rodeo Association drill team will thrill the audience again with their grand entry performance at the Koloa Plantation Days Rodeo on Sunday, August 1. Everyone is invited to CJM Country Stables (about a mile-1/2 past the Hyatt in Poipu) for the fifth annual event, beginning at noon. There will be a $1.00 gate fee donation per person to benefit Kaua‘i’s YMCA, with children under five free.
The Kaua‘i All-Girls Rodeo Association was established in 1999 to preserve, perpetuate and promote Kaua‘i’s paniolo culture and lifestyle.
It has grown from the original 11 members to over 50 women ranging in age from teens to grandmothers. KAGRA is currently the largest women’s rodeo association in the State. Some of the local cowgirls are among the top rated rodeo competitors in Hawai‘i. In addition to performing the grand opening ceremony at the Koloa Plantation Days Rodeo over the past several years, the association also puts on six rodeos just for women throughout the year and an Aloha Festival State Championship Rodeo annually. Kaua‘i’s cowgirls and their beautifully decorated horses appear in many community parades and cultural events throughout the island.
Koloa Plantation Days Rodeo coordinators Joyce and Jimmy Miranda encourages everyone to come down early to CJM arena, find a comfortable seat in the bleachers and not miss a moment of the All-Girls Rodeo Drill Team grand entry performance.
