Question: At the Lihu‘e Airport, why aren’t the concessions and shops located outside the security checkpoint so the public can get to them? Answer: As is obvious to travelers and their “meeters and greeters,” the airport terminal was designed with concessions on the inside where passengers and their meeters and greeters could gather.
Prior to Sept. 11, 2001, passengers and their meeters and greeters were allowed inside after passing through security.
Following Sept. 11 only ticketed passengers were allowed beyond the security checkpoint, controlled by the Transportation Security Administration.
Tim Skinner, Lihu‘e Airport acting superintendent, said discussions are ongoing to provide a limited amount of concession-type activities, outside of security, for travelers and meeters and greeters. However, all such plans must meet TSA approval.
There was once a hot dog stand outside, but it was removed about eight months ago because it was unprofitable.
Today, there are lei carts at baggage-claim areas provided by the terminal flower shop.
Also, restrooms and benches are available outside the terminal.
