LIHU‘E — Breathing is sometimes taken for granted when you can do it well, but for people with asthma, breathing is of highest priority and most importantly, it’s a matter of life or death.
The Fourth Annual Kaua‘i Asthma Sports Day Camp this past weekend at Kuku‘i Grove Park and Pavilion provided great information on ways to prevent attacks and awareness of the different types of treatment and asthma triggers.
“The purpose of this camp is for children to learn how to manage their asthma and we have doctors and great volunteers, who have made this camp very successful,” Program coordinator Jan Robinson said.
With games, sporting events, and healthy tips from professionals and volunteers, the participants came away with lots of good information and a fun weekend.
“I have three kids that have gone through this camp and I love coming out and supporting them at this great event,” parent and volunteer Zina Hough said.
Even with doctors on hand, it was good to see them playing sports instead of tending to the children.
“The combination of sports and bringing awareness to asthma is a great way to get the kids interested, yet at the same time learn something extremely valuable about their conditions,” Internal Medicine Dr. Doug Duvauchelle said.
From painting to volleyball, to swinging around with a hula hoop, to the pigs lung demonstration, and of course the food, the 2004 Kaua‘i Asthma Sports Day Camp ended with another helpful and fun way to learn about asthma.
