Calling all north and west shore soccer players
The upcoming soccer season starts August 1 and AYSO is still accepting registrations for many ages on the East and North sides. AYSO is for players ages 4 – 19.
AYSO is looking for coaches in Kapa‘a, Wailua, Kilauea and Hanalei to coach many levels of soccer: Parents, Grandparents, Aunties, Uncles, and even older siblings, who care about and enjoy working with kids or teens are encouraged to come out. AYSO will train and all that’s required is some of your time and enthusiasm. They need coaches in order for many of these kids to play. All coaches must be at least 18 years of age. New this year is teams for 4 year olds, who turn 4 by 7/31/04. Call the AYSO hotline for information on where to sign up, 823-9018.
Golf tournament to benefit a great cause
The First Annual Quiksilver, Nalu Underground, and King Auto Center Golf Tournament to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Kaua‘i happens on August 6 at the Kiahuna Golf Club. 10 a.m. is check-in time with a 12 p.m. shotgun start. This is a three man scramble and silent auction event with lots of prizes, including a hole-in-one Dodge Hemi truck. Entry fee is $75.00, which includes green fees, t-shirts, and an awards party. Request for sporting events proposals
Rex Johnson, President and CEO of the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA) has announced the HTA’s request for proposals for the Sporting Events which occur between October 15, 2004 to December 31, 2005. The solicitation is for sporting events that will attract participants and spectators and increase Hawai‘i’s appeal as a destination for recreation and activity, leading to positive economic impacts for the state and its residents and assisting in overall economic diversification.
The application and information packet will be available on the HTA website at www.hawaii .gov/tourism for download or you may call (808) 973-2255 to request a packet. Deadline for submission of proposals to the HTA is 4:30 p.m., August 31, 2004.
George puts on cowboy hat
Eddie George agreed to a contract with the Dallas Cowboys, two days after he was released by Tennessee. George was expected to sign for a base salary near $1.5 million, but with many reachable incentives that could take him closer to $4.25 million. George left the Titans after eight seasons and more than 10,000 yards. He has never missed a game in his 128-game career.
Olerud to find new home
Former AL batting champion John Olerud was released by the last-place Seattle Mariners.
Olerud was hitting .245 with five homers and 22 RBIs in 77 games when he was designated for assignment last week. He was in the final year of his contract, earning $7.7 million this season. Olerud hit an AL-leading .363 with Toronto in 1993, when the Blue Jays won their second straight World Series title. He has a career average of .295.
HPU picks new basketball coach
After a two-month nationwide search, Hawaii Pacific University announced Saturday night that it had appointed J.D. Barnett the school’s new athletic director and men’s basketball coach.
Barnett succeeds Russell Dung, who previously announced he would retire from the positions upon the completion of his contract. Barnett is set to take up his new duties Aug. 1. He is currently senior associate athletic director for revenue development and cost containment at Tulane University.
Earlier in his career, Barnett coached at Louisiana Tech, Virginia Commonwealth, Tulsa and Northwest State University.
Calling all softball players
Coast to Coast Softball is recruiting Hawai‘i area softball players (ages 16-19) to represent the U.S.A. in international competition in Australia. The open tryout is set for August 19 at Ala Wai Park on O‘ahu, starting at 9 a.m. Oustanding amateurs, selected from as many as 25 states nationwide will compete against international all-star teams during the 2004-2005 winter and summer school breaks. Each Coast to Coast tour lasts 7-14 days and is jam-packed with action, intensive training, and cultural excursions. The teams are managed by a staff of top college coaches who provide participating players with a unique perspective on what it’s like to play at the collegiate level.
