This time next year, two cruise ships will be staying overnight at Nawiliwili, meaning ships will always be in port at least four days and two nights a week.
That’s good news for operators of attractions, activities, malls and shops, as cruise-ship visitors spend an average of $105 per person per day while in port.
The announcement that Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America, under construction now in Germany, will overnight at Nawiliwili beginning in July of 2005, is welcome news for members of the Kauai Cruise Ship Committee, members said.
The NCL’s Pride of Aloha, the Pride of America’s sister ship, calls on Nawiliwili each Monday morning, staying overnight and leaving early Tuesday afternoon.
Both “Prides” are U.S.-flagged ships, a designation enabling them to cruise interisland without having to make an international stop between Hawai‘i ports to comply with federal maritime law.
NCL’s Norwegian Wind, also based in Hawai‘i, is not a U.S.-flagged ship, therefore must travel to Fanning Island in the Republic of Kiribati as part of its interisland itinerary. Pride of America will be the first new-built, U.S.-flagged cruise ship in 50 years, and will employ 1,000 U.S. seafarers (crew) and generate millions of dollars, an NCL spokesperson said.
