The annual fund-raising event that showcases Philippine national costumes, songs and dances, and has over the years evolved into one of the island’s most-anticipated social events, marks its 40th anniversary next weekend.
The Kauai Filipino Women’s Club 40th Annual Terno Ball is Saturday, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. at the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort & Beach Club’s Grand Ballroom, and is a benefit for the club’s annual scholarship program which this year saw $4,000 awarded to stellar students of Filipino ancestry.
Recipients this year graduated from all three of the island’s public high schools. This year’s scholarship recipients, now in college, are Michael Erorita, Jeremy Albano, William Acorda, Whitney Planas, Ashley Valvieja, Juliene Mateo, Jonelle Renti Cruz and Cindee Ancheta.
The Terno Ball features dancing and fellowship, a contest were the most elegant couple is crowned, and individual contests to determine winners of the most beautiful terno (flowing Filipino formal gowns) and best barong Tagalog (long-sleeve Filipino formal shirt).
A buffet dinner will also be served.
Emme Tomimbang, host and producer of local television’s “Emme’s Island Moments,” is this year’s guest emcee, sharing the podium with Wailua’s Dr. Arnulfo Diaz.
Hannah Timbol is the event chairperson, and Liza Cabal Trinidad is club president.
