LIHU‘E — If volleyball is your cup of tea, then get your cup ready, because you’ll love what’s coming up from August 12-14.
Kaua‘i High School will host the Third Annual Kaua‘i Challenge Girls Volleyball Invitational at Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a High School Gyms.
The girls high school varsity volleyball tournament will host 14 teams, which almost doubles the amount of teams from last year.
On Thursday and Friday, August 12-13, all matches will take place at the Kaua‘i High School gym and on Saturday, August 14, the games will add Kapa‘a Gym, along with the Kaua‘i High gym.
Teams competing in the tournament include: Iowa, Lincoln City Tigers (Oregon), Rio Mesa (California), Club Dublin (California), Santa Barbara (California), Roosevelt, Pearl City, Leilehua, Maryknoll, Kamehameha-Maui, Waimea, Kapa‘a, and host Kaua‘i.
“The tournament will raise money for the volleyball program and provide high schools on Kaua‘i with the opportunity to play quality pre-season volleyball at home,” Kaua‘i High School girls varsity coach and tournament director Rich Roberts said.
“The community has been very supportive and we are grateful to our sponsors Syngenta Seeds, Aston Hotels, Bank of Hawai‘i Insurance, Big Save, Koa Trading, Raytheon Solipsys, King Auto Center, Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC), Ventures, Kikiaola Land Company, Detor and Williams, CPA, and Brennecke’s Beach Broiler, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, Kapa‘a High School, and the many parents and volunteers,” Roberts said.
Travel International Sports is also promoting the tournament through its website at www.tisworld.com and is offering travel packages for mainland teams.
Shortly following the championship match, there will be an awards banquet featuring key note speaker, Tyler Durman. For the past 20 years, Durman has been regarded as one of the country’s most sought after motivational speakers.
“Teams from Ohio, South Carolina, Lake Tahoe, and California have already begun inquiring about the Fourth Annual Kaua‘i Challenge, so the entire staff is excited about the future potential of the tournament,” Roberts said.
