Takashi Isoda
Takashi Isoda of Koloa died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Aug. 9, 2004 at the age of 75.
Born in Koloa, Kaua‘i on April 8, 1929, he was a retired heavy equipment operator with the sugar plantations. Preceded in death by a sister, Natsue Nakagawa, he is survived by five brothers, Seishi (Sue) Isoda of Chicago, Ill., Sadashi (Alice) Isoda of Torrance, Calif., Akio (Elaine) Isoda of Koloa, Herbert (Janet) Isoda of Honolulu, O‘ahu and Wallace (Barbara) Isoda of Wailua; sister, Ethel (Seichi) Oyama of Lawa‘i; numerous aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family from 3 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel; service officiated by Rev. Tone will begin at 4 p.m. Casual attire is suggested and that flowers be omitted.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
David Kaona III
David “Sonny” Kawika Kaona III of Hanalei, died Aug. 7, 2004, at his home at the age of 70.
Born May 27, 1934, in Honolulu, he was a laborer for the County of Kaua‘i.
He is survived by two daughters: Caridyn Colburn and Davilyn Hoomanawanui; one son: Shawn Strickland; three brothers: Clarence Kaona, Henry Kaona and Kenneth Kaona; two sisters: Diana Spencer and Kele Momi Lopez; 10 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, at Hanalei Canoe Club with Memorial services celebrated at 11 a.m. Scattering will take place at a later date.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Koolauloa Meatoga
Koolauloa Meatoga of Kapa‘a died Aug. 10, 2004, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 76.
Born May 23, 1928, in La‘ie, O‘ahu, he was a unit representative in the construction industry.
He is survived by five sons; Bruce Meatoga of Oregon, Brian Meatoga of Kapa‘a, Kenneth (Lynette) Meatoga of Kalaheo, Henry Kamaunu of O‘ahu, Thurstan (Kepola) Kamaunu of O‘ahu; four daughters: Debra H. Meatoga of Kapa‘a, Tracey Kamaunu of O‘ahu, Nobeline Kamaunu of Maui, and Melody Kamaunu of Oregon; one sister: Anovale Napoleon of O‘ahu; one brother: John (Amalia) Meatoga of Utah; 16 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends may call on Saturday, Aug. 28, at Kapaa First Hawaiian Church from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. where memorial services will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Inurnment will follow at St. Catherine’s Church Cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Theresa K. Culver
Theresa K. Culver died July 17, 2004 at Hale Kupuna Heritage Home at the age of 87.
Mrs. Culver was born October 17, 1916 in Chicago Heights, Ill. She moved to Kauai December of 2002 from Champaign, Illinois to be near her daughter, Carol Culver.
Preceded in death by her husband, Charles J. Culver in January 2001, she is survived by two daughters: Carol Culver of Kapaa, and Ilianna Culver-Dufford of Soquel, California; one sister: Vickie Melei of Chicago Heights, Ill.; one brother: Larry Aprati of Orland Park, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her remains were cremated on July 20 at Borthwick Mortuary. A special memorial was held July 25 in Soquel, California at the home of her daughter, Ilianna.
Remembrances may be made to Kauai Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Gloria Yadao Acoba
Gloria Yadao Acoba of Kalaheo died on Aug. 12, 2004, in Burlington, Wash., at the age of 63.
Born on Dec. 5, 1940, in Kilauea, she was formerly employed at Gray Line and the state of Hawai‘i.
She is survived by her husband: Andres Acoba of Kalaheo; four sons: Frederick of Kalaheo, Nathan (Yvonne) of Chehalis, Wash., Andres Jr. of Lacey, Wash., and Darren (Maile) of Burlington, Wash. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren: Tyrus of Cupertino, Calif., Natasha, Maegen, and Ashley of Seattle, Wash., Arianne, Troy and Taylen of Kalaheo; Curtis of Lacey, Wash.; Nakoa, Ka‘imi and Kylie of Burlington, Wash.; four sisters: Sally Pasion of Hanama‘ulu, Paula (Santiago) Cadaoas of ‘Oma‘o, Veronica (Robert) Cook of Wailua Homesteads, Karen Guillermo of Irvine, Calif.; one brother: Cesario (Carmelita) Yadao of Hillsboro, Ore., and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 24, at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo with viewing from 10 a.m. to noon.
Mass will be celebrated at noon. Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens in Kapaia.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
Debbra Lyon
Debbra (Debi) Lynn Lyon of Cleveland, Ohio, and formerly of Kaua‘i, died Aug. 11, 2004, at Fairview Medical Hospital in Cleveland at the age of 48.
Born Oct. 3, 1955, in Germany, she graduated from Leilehua High School.
She was raised in Hawai‘i and worked for Sears Portrait Studio on Kaua‘i then transferred to the Mainland. She retired in 2002 in San Diego, Calif.
She worked at home etching beautiful pictures of Hawai‘i on glass. Hawai‘i was the place she called home.
She still visited her home in Puhi every chance she got, then later she decided to move to Cleveland and sell her house on Kaua‘i.
She is survived by her husband, George W. Lyon, Sr., parents, Richard Kiyabu and Heidi Kiyabu; two sons: James A. (Marisa) Berardi of Kaua‘i, and Ian R. (Mark) Berardi of Cleveland, Ohio; four sisters: Cathy (Jay) Camel, Grace (Scott) Chounard, Patty (Rikky) Glenn, and Lani Evens, one granddaughter, seven nieces and three nephews.
Services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 14, at Donlon Funeral Home in Cleveland, Ohio.
Friends and family on the island of Kaua‘i will be able to say their goodbyes on Saturday, Aug. 21, at 5 p.m. at Maha‘ulepu Beach.
