According to Beth B. Risinger, IEHA CEO and executive director, International Housekeepers Week started in 1981, when Oneita Dease requested that Doug Slingerland come up with an idea to recognize the “doers” in the housekeeping field.
A national letter-writing campaign with the theme “Have You Hugged Your Housekeeper Today?” got underway. An article appeared in the December 1981 issue of Executive Housekeeping Today to explain the results of the 1981 National Housekeepers Week, and the material was displayed during the following Congress in St. Louis, Mo., in 1982.
In July 1996, the celebration became international and was changed to International Housekeepers Week.
