Ask coach Calvin Paleka about how the calendar overflows now that two more KIF sports kicked in for the Fall season.
Coach Paleka was doing duty with the football games Friday night, helped serve food (Joel Pahukula was checking out the Hole-E-Cow), cleaned the stadium, and still made it to Kula School for the KIF cross country opener Saturday morning.
Manny and Sam Henriques had an even busier calendar as they were football-ing (somehow, Gary Saiki in green is not the same as in brown), cross country-ing (thank you, Ruth Belmonte for remembering the community basketball games!), and finally settled in at the Clem Gomes for volleyball (Subway Sandwiches come in handy between games).
Scott Nakamatsu had his hands full trying to keep the sound going as well as monitoring the shift of video crews (Ku‘ulei Nakashima did two games!) between games, and Joyce Evens was able to be “the voice of the Menehune” even if she had to unpack the 1500 shirts that arrived just in time for the Waimea HS dress code to kick in (wear your colors, Oct. 1, Menehune!).
And, if you didn’t see her at Friday night’s football, she tried sitting in a new location! Liz Hahn was at Friday night’s football game, and orchestrated the migration of Menehune musicians to the baton (check it out) of Kapa‘a band director Catherine Paleka so they could rehearse their Tournament of Roses numbers during halftime. Hats off to Alfred Darling of the Red Cross for spearheading the Disaster Preparedness event at Kukui Grove – Mike Kano had an actual radio setup operating, and the Kaua‘i High School Leo Club was all over the mall distributing the special disaster preparedness packets. Donna and George Schulze were busy doing their blood pressure checks.
