The Garden Island newspaper and Zonta Club of Kauai have again teamed up to try to make the holidays brighter for our needy senior citizens, children and families. The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund has been helping Kaua‘i families for over 30 years. Letters are sent to island agencies such as Easter Seals and the Agency on Elderly Affairs seeking referrals of clients who are most in need. Last year, the community’s generous donations helped 153 adults and 140 children. This year, even more requests for assistance have been received. The Christmas Fund volunteers use monetary donations to purchase gift certificates and gift cards that are distributed to families and individuals.
Because of the logistical problems in distributing donated items, only monetary donations can be accepted.
Life in a tent doesn’t dampen this family’s love
This family of seven feels like strangers in their own home. For now, they are living in a small tent and fear that the winter months will make life miserable. They could use a stronger tent or better yet some sort of wooden enclosure to keep the rain from coming in. Despite their meager incomes, they are still a loving family. Clothes for the kids and jackets are badly need but some toys would make the young ones smile.
Now on her own, Susan could use some help
Susan is an 18-year old who recently moved into a foster home for developmentally disabled adults. New clothes and some personal items would cheer her greatly during the holidays as she adjusts to living away from her family. Her parents are unable to help her because they are having their own difficulties. Both are unemployed due to disabilities.
Haunani would love some new clothes
Haunani is a beautiful 7-year-old, physically challenged young girl who comes from a broken home. She is currently being raised by her mother who is a single working parent and as such is struggling financially. Haunani is having some difficult adjusting without her father in the home, but is surrounded by a loving extended family. Haunani would really enjoy some new clothes this Christmas.
Donations can be mailed to the Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund, P.O. Box 1120, Kapaa, HI, 96746. For more information, contact Dimples Kano at 822-9882.
