A Costco store soon may be coming to Kaua‘i.
An official with Grove Farm has confirmed that the company is negotiating with Costco and that a store could be open and ready in the Puhi area by this time next year.
“We are working diligently to get a Costco store open here in our commercial area,” said Allan Smith, vice president and chief operating officer with Grove Farm.
Costco should soon be coming forward with a statement confirming plans of the new store, Smith said.
Officials at Costco’s regional headquarters in Garden Grove, Calif., yesterday would not return a call to confirm whether a new store is coming to Kaua‘i.
There are five Costco’s in Hawai‘i, including Hawaii Kai, Iwilei and Waipio on O‘ahu, Kona on the Big Island, and one on Maui.
Costco Wholesale Corporation operates an international chain of membership warehouses, mainly under the “Costco Wholesale” name.
Categories include groceries, candy, appliances, television and media, automotive supplies, tires, toys, hardware, sporting goods, jewelry, watches, cameras, books, housewares, apparel, health and beauty aids, tobacco, furniture, office supplies and office equipment.
The Company also operates self-service gasoline stations at a number of its U.S. and Canadian locations.
Costco is open only to members and offers three types of membership: Business, Gold Star (individual) and the Executive membership.
Business members qualify by owning or operating a business, and pay an annual fee ($45 in the U.S.) to shop for resale, business and personal use.
This fee includes a spouse card. Business members may purchase up to six additional membership cards ($35 each) for partners or associates in the business.
A transferable company card may also be purchased.
Costco is a Washington corporation, publicly traded under the Nasdaq ticker symbol “COST”, with its home office in Issaquah, Wa.
