The Garden Island newspaper and Zonta Club of Kauai have again teamed up to try to make the holidays brighter for our needy senior citizens, children and families. The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund has been helping Kaua‘i families for over 30 years. Letters are sent to island agencies such as Easter Seals and the Agency on Elderly Affairs seeking referrals of clients who are most in need. Last year, the community’s generous donations helped 153 adults and 140 children. This year, even more requests for assistance have been received. The Christmas Fund volunteers use monetary donations to purchase gift certificates and gift cards that are distributed to families and individuals.
Because of the logistical problems in distributing donated items, only monetary donations can be accepted.
Sam loves to share but has little money to do so
Sam lives alone in a senior housing unit. He is very independent and loves to go shopping at Wal-Mart to buy snacks for himself and to share with his friends. But being on a very limited budget, he doesn’t get the chance to make the shopping trip very often. A gift certificate that would allow him to indulge himself would brighten his holiday season.
Mrs. Aloha would love a gift certificate
Mrs. Aloha is 77 years old and is faced with physical and financial challenges at home. She lives with her daughter but recently had back surgery and has not been working for the last four months. Mrs. Aloha loves to knit and crochet. Receiving a gift certificate that can help her buy some of the material she needs for her craft would make her so happy this Christmas season.
Gift certificate for Mr. Dolley
Gift certificate would buy ‘something special for Mr. Dolley and his disabled daughter
Mr. Dolley lives with his daughter, who is also disabled and works only part-time. They have very little money coming in each month and most of what they do have goes toward buying medicine or diapers for him. Receiving a gift certificate would allow them to buy something special for the holidays and not have to worry about finding the money to pay for it.
Donations can be mailed to the Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund, P.O. Box 1120, Kapaa, HI, 96746. For more information, contact Dimples Kano at 822-9882.
