Commuting between Honolulu International Airport and Lihu‘e Airport is the 21st century version of Kaua‘i’s commuter train station.
A number of professionals working in the fields of government, medical, education, technology and other professions make two or more trips per week between the islands.
The inter-island commutes have been made possible through discounted commuter tickets sold by Aloha Airlines and Hawaiian Air, with prices ranging as high as $2,000 per month. Hawaiian dropped the plan several months ago and was joined by Aloha as of today.
The frequent interisland flyers will now have to buy individual tickets for each flight, at a much greater cost.
