It seems just like yesterday for Hanalei’s Andy and Bruce Irons, who made their way to the top of the surfing world.
The Irons brothers present their Fourth Annual Pine Trees Classic event on Saturday, February 19 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Pine Trees Beach in Hanalei.
Hosted by three-time consecutive ASP World Champion Andy and 2004 Eddie Aikau Champion brother Bruce, the Pine Trees Classic is a surf competition that was created for young, up and coming Kaua‘i surfers so Andy and Bruce could give back to the local kids.
The Pine Trees Classic is a one-day event for surfer kids aged 14 and under where 120 kids will have the opportunity to compete, hang out with Andy and Bruce for the day and win prizes, which include surfboards, t-shirts, industry stuff and the opportunity to win a round trip ticket to California for the upcoming Nationals competition.
It all goes back to the story of two brothers who grew up in Hanalei, each having the goal of becoming professional surfers.
Today Andy and Bruce have not forgotten their roots and present this day as an opportunity to allow locals the chance to surf competitively and follow their own pro surfing dreams in their backyard where it all began for them.
Sponsors of the Pine Trees Classic include: Billabong, Volcom, DC Shoes, VonZipper, Arnette, Dakine, HIC Surfboards, Tractor Surfboards, Body Glove, Red Bull, Amp’d Mobile, Hanalei Surf Co., Nixon, Salty S, Kai Kane, Surfer Magazine, Surfing Magazine, YMCA and Big Tim of Hanalei Gourmet.
The contest is free for all kids who enter and every kid will walk away with tons of free stuff. Each competitor will be given a bag full of promo gear just for entering the event.
Six groups with six competitors each will be given trophies. There will also be an expression session invite only with three heats. Nelson Togioka, Hawai‘i Surf Federation, is the contest director for this event.
