DENVER – Amy Sanders, a University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine basketball player, was named the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 14.
The is the first career WAC Player of the Week honor for the UH junior as well as the first honor for the Rainbow Wahine this year.
The Rainbow Wahine defeated Louisiana Tech and lost to the Mustangs by two.
Sanders, a junior from Huntington, Calif., averaged 18.5 ppg and 10.5 rpg in games against Louisiana Tech and SMU, scoring a career-high 27 points as well as the game-winning basket with 10 rebounds in Rainbow Wahine’s 79-78 overtime win over the Lady Techsters.
Against SMU, Sanders scored 10 points and secured 11 re-bounds.
The guard hit 13-of-16 free throws against Louisiana Tech, and was 15-for-18 for the week.
The win over the Lady Techsters was the University of Hawai‘i’s first in 15 all-time meetings dating back to 1980, joining Rice and Boise State as the only teams to have defeated the Lady Techsters since the Lady Techsters joined the WAC during the 2001-02 season.
