MacArthur sails to an around-the-world record
LONDON — Ellen MacArthur has endured stormy seas, 65 mph winds, a broken sail, burns, bruises and exhaustion — even a close encounter with a whale. The payoff: a solo around-the-world sailing record.
The 28-year-old Englishwoman completed the 26,000-mile circumnavigation at 5:29 p.m. EST on Monday by crossing an imaginary finish line between Ushant, France, and the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall on the south coast of England.
Her final time was 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds, her control team said.
Her 75-foot trimaran B&Q broke the record set by Francis Joyon, who set the mark of 72 days, 22 hours, 54 minutes and 22 seconds, in February 2004.
Yoshizawa earns WAC Player of the Week honors
DENVER named – University of Hawai‘i softball player Kristi Yoshizawa was Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday for her stellar play in the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic.
Third base Yoshizawa, a junior transfer out of Sierra College from Rancho Cordova, Calif., made her debut as a Rainbow Wahine this weekend.
She hit .500, going 5-for-10, with one double, one stolen base, and scored two runs while driving in three more.
She was one of two Rainbow Wahine to garner All-Tournament honors along with short-stop Ashley Ruff.
In Hawai‘i’s come-back win over #9 Washington, Yoshizawa hit a game-tying, two-run double in the top of the seventh, scoring the winning run later in the inning on a wild pitch.
Grady leads Pacers in dual win Saturday
Jondelle the Aceret-Ipac and Tanisha DeFabian each notched eight points to lead Westside Hornets to a 27-19 showing over the Lihu‘e Pacers in the county’s 12 and Under girls basketball games that was played Saturday, Feb. 5 in Kalaheo.
Randee Layosa and Janessa Grady each finished with seven points to lead the Pacers.
In the Pacers’ second game of the day, Grady took the lead with a game-high 18 points in their 31-22 win over Wailua who was led by Jodie Das’ eight points.
Kelsdey Cadiente and Katrina Dreier combined for 30 points to lead Lihu‘e over Gee’s Angels, 40-14 in the second contest of the day. Cadiente finished with 16 points followed by Dreier adding 14 markers.
Lahela Cramer topped the Angels with five points followed by Arrissa Thronas who chalked up four points.
Erin Connelly and Jaymie Jacinto led Waimea B&G in their 33-15 win over Kalaheo, Connelly leading the charge with eight points followed a digit back by Jacinto who finished with seven points.
Christina Pearson led Kalaheo with three points.
