Island School freshman Ben Baldwin continued to dominate on Saturday in the KIF’s final qualifying meet at Kaua‘i High School’s pool.
Baldwin (2:06.69) set a new Kaua‘i pool record in the 200 yard IM and churned past Kaua‘i’s Keenan Anaya (2:09.07) by about three seconds. Both swimmers managed to clock state qualifying times.
Anaya also qualified for states in the 500 yard free with a time of 5:20.02. Baldwin, who already qualified for states in the 100 yard breast, came close to the state time, but still won the event over Kaua‘i’s Tyson Chihara.
Kaua‘i’s Meaghan Sims capped off the day with multiple wins in the 200 yard free (2:21.21) over Island’s Michelle Woltman (2:27.88) and in the 100 yard fly (1:14.61) outswimming Kula’s Zoli Wall (1:17.56).
Kapa‘a (Stephanie Perius, Pauline Lucas, Jennifer Lindsey, Liana Nakazawa) took home the girls’ 200 yard medley relay contest (2:13.52).
In the boys’ 200 yard medley relay, Kaua‘i’s Anaya, Nick Murray, Aaron Ramelb, and Cory Riley ran away with the win (1:56.34). Kapa‘a’s Jason OrbeSmith (2:22.96) beat out teammate James Hitchcock (2:27.04) in the boys 200 yard free.
Kaua‘i’s Torrey Ikeda dominated the girls 200 yard IM race with a time of 2:52.08. The next closest competitor was Kapa‘a’s Jamie Chambers at 3:10.68. Longlegged Jennifer Lindsey (28.27) of Kapa‘a won a close girls’ 50 yard free race over Kula’s Wall (28.64). Murray (25.09) edged Kaua‘i teammate Kelsey Tanaka (25.16) in the boys’ 50 yard free contest. But Tanaka (54.45) came back to take the boys’ 100 yard free title over Ramelb (55.13). Red Raider Tyson Chihara (1:04.97) grabbed the boys’ 100 yard fly competition over Waimea’s Gregg Fujimoto (1:16.93).
Menehune Jade Cassmas (1:07.30) got the victory in the girls’ 100 yard free race over Kaua‘i’s Mary Tousend (1:08.25). Kapa‘a’s Nakazawa (6:26.23) was almost 30 seconds faster than her closest opponent, Kaua‘i’s Kellie Oshiro in the girls’ 500 free race.
In the girls’ 200 yard free relay, Kapa‘a (Marla BenDor, Kali Grooms, Perius, Lindsey) (1:57.87) managed to outduel (1:58.86) Waimea (Cassmas, Tiffani Tumbaga, Katelyn Umetsu, Kelly Joyce) for the win. The Warriors (Nakazawa, Pauline Lucas, Magen Grooms, Periu) also snatched the girls’ 400 yard free relay title (4:30.29). Murray, Ramelb, Anaya, and Tanaka ran away with the boys’ 200 yard free relay race (1:40.58). Kapa‘a (Trader Wilcox, James Hitchcock, Jason OrbeSmith, Tyler Jamison) was triumphant in the boys’ 400 yard free relay race (4:20.83) over Kula (Evan Daniells, Cameron Blake, Matthew Vinsko, Max Miles).
Ramelb (1:08.51) also won the boys’ 100 yard back event over Kaua‘i teammate Kyson “Da Goose” Gusukuma (1:11.94). Kapa‘a’s Perius reached the wall first in the girls’ 100 yard back race (1:12.19).
Waimea’s Umetsu continued to win on Saturday with another victory in the 100 yard breast (1:25.28) over Kaua‘i’s Ikeda (1:26.38).
KIF swimming makes its final mark this Saturday, Feb. 12 for the KIF Championship meet, hosted by Island School at 1 p.m.
