Black Enterprise (BE), a premier business and investment magazine for African Americans, have chosen UH athletics director Herman Frazier as one of the 50 Most Powerful Blacks in Sports, as featured in its March 2005 cover story, The list includes top administrators, decision makers in collegiate, professional sports and related industries, “Although many superstar black athletes dominate their chosen playing fields, the true power in sports lie with the executives who work behind the scenes,” says Alan Hughes, BE features editor.
Frazier is one of seven athletic directors chosen and one of eight included in the collegiate decision makers category.
Other sports notables listed include: Isaiah Thomas, president of basketball operations of the New York Knicks; Donna Bryan, VP of business affairs of NBC Sports, Reggie Williams, VP of Disney Sports Attractions Inc.; and Michael Jordan, NBA Legend. BE worked with various professional and collegiate sports organizations, industry insiders, and experts to determine the 50 Most Pwerful Blacks in Sports. Puakea Golf Course earns certification
Puakea Golf Course, Hawai‘i’s best kept secret and newest 18-hole facility owned by AOL founder Steve Case, announces that its award-winning, Robin Nelson designed layout has received a “Beginner Friendly Certification” from the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA). Puakea was selected from over 6000 NGCOA member courses throughout the U.S. and Canada. Courses were evaluated on a number of criteria including availability of clinics, loaner clubs, special playing times for beginners and other initiatives. All courses receiving beginner friendly certification are listed on a national web site, www.getlinkedplaygolf.com
“Beginner Friendly Certification is national recognition of the programs and services that Puakea provides to encourage people to come and enjoy the game of golf,” says Paul Ito, director of golf at Puakea.
Waimea baseball results
Kaua‘i High School fell to Waianae, 5-1 yesterday in the opener of the Waimea Baseball Tournament.
The Menehune lost their two contests, the first one to Leilehua, 3-2 and the second game to Aiea, 12-4. Kapa‘a plays a doubleheader today at 12 p.m. In the first game, the Warriors will challenge Waianae in Waimea and in the second game at 2:30 p.m., Kapa‘a will face off with Kaua‘i, also at Waimea.
Aiea and Leilehua will do battle at Hanapepe Stadium, starting at 2:30 p.m.
Lihu‘e Pop Warner looking for coaches
The Lihu‘e Pop Warner Association is looking for a Cheer Head Coach for their Jr. Pee Wee Division.
Also, Lihu‘e Pop Warner will be having their General Membership Meeting on Monday, April 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the Lihue Neighborhood Center.
Registration forms for the upcoming 2005 tackle and spirit season will be distributed at this meeting. All Lihu‘e Pop Warner parents, participants, coaches and volunteers are urged to attend this very important meeting.
