It was a record-breaking day for the Western Kentucky University men’s golf team, yesterday.
In winning both the team and individual titles at the 2005 Kaua‘i Collegiate Cup at Princeville’s Makai Golf Course, the Hilltoppers and junior Robby Shaw broke school and tournament records. Shaw’s 54-hole total of 204 (9-under par) broke former Hilltopper Eric Mason’s tournament record by three shots.
As a team, Western obliterated the old tournament record by 43 shots with a team score of 824 (40-under par). In addition, the Hilltoppers’ final round score of 268 (20-under par) set a school record.
Western Kentucky’s Parker Scarbro and Brent Long tied for individual runner-up honors at 205 (11-under par).
Jeff Castle of Towson University and Matthew Hicks of West Liberty State College finished fourth and fifth respectively to also earn All-Tournament honors.
Towson University took second place in the team competition with an 846 (18-under par), and Northern Illinois was just two shots back at 848.
First time participant BYUH was glad about the experience they picked up at the tournament.
“Well, being this is our first year of having a men’s golf program and not having any scholarship players, we feel this is a good start and we hope to come back to this tournament again for years to come,” BYUH athletics director Scott Lowe said.
The only Hawaiian-born player in the tournament, Jude Sells of BYUH, finished in 32nd-place with a 37-over-par 253 total.
Meanwhile, Western Kentucky’s Ryan Waialae, whose father was born in Waianae, scored sixth-place (8-under-par 208), despite not being in the top five for his squad.
