The KIF girls’ season starts later this month. To be exact, the first game tips off on the 29th, as the Warriors battle Kaua‘i at the Raiderdome. Preseason action is underway, with the Kaua‘i girls finishing up in third-place with a 2-1 showing at The King Kekaulike Girls Basketball Classic held from March 3-5. The Red Raiders edged Nanakuli in the first game, 37-35. Then in the second contest, Kaiser defeated Kaua‘i, 53-35. Last season’s KIF player of the year, Ulu Kelekoma led the way with 11 points. She was helped out by this year’s KIF softball player of the year, Sherri Gebauer with nine points. Ho‘onani Dennis contributed with eight, followed by Kassy Morishige with three, Rachel Taira and Tamlyn Hasegawa scored two points each. Kaua‘i bounced back in the third game with a 56-52 win over Hawai‘i Baptist. Taira lit up the scoreboard with 21 markers. Kelekoma notched 10 points and Darcie Allianic put up nine points in the win. Dennis and Gebauer had eight points apiece. Kaiser won the tournament by beating Leilehua by the score of 55-26. Kelekoma was selected to the all-tournament team.
Kaua‘i girls tennis beats Kula
The Red Raider girls nearly blanked Kula last Saturday in KIF tennis action at the Kiahuna Tennis Courts. Kaua‘i won 4-1, thanks to Alana White, Elise Miyamoto, Kellie Torigoe, Jenna Gampon, Mattie Leninger, Auika Muragin, and Rachel Parker.
Ariel Carlson was the only Kula winner, as she upended Dasha Lagmay, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in first singles action. White cruised by Danielle Hoen, 6-4, 6-4 in the second singles match.
In first doubles, Miyamoto and Torigoe outlasted Nora Robertson and Anna Novoselov, 6-1, 6-3. Gampon and Leninger blanked Kristen Steiner and Summer Ryll, 6-0, 6-0 in the second doubles contest. Muragin and Parker took care of Chloe Garrett and her partner Chantay, 6-0, 6-0 in third doubles action. KIF tennis continues today at 12 p.m. Island and Kula will battle at the Hanalei Bay Resorts Courts and Kapa‘a and Kaua‘i will tangle at the Kiahuna Tennis Courts.
KPAL Northshore flag football signups
There will be KPAL flag foot-ball and cheerleading signups for the northshore area on April 6, 8, 13, and 15 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Kilauea N.C.
Eligible players include ages 4-6 (Cubs), 7-9 (Bobcat), and 10-12 (Wildcat).
Applications may be picked up and completed during registration dates. For all players, parents must bring a copy of their child’s birth certificate and updated medical card at time of registration.

Kaua‘i girls softball meeting
The Kaua‘i Amateur Softball Association Girls Junior Olympics fast pitch season will be starting soon. An organizational meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 6:30 p.m. at the Kalaheo N.C., room 106. For more info., call Mike Koerte at 645-0654.
Kaua‘i teams not in the final
Two O‘ahu teams, Waianae and Leilehua will face off in the championship game of the Waimea Baseball Tournament today at 2 p.m. Both teams are 2-0 in the tournament, followed by Kaua‘i and Aiea at 1-1. The two will battle in the third-place game at 11:30 a.m. Host Waimea will play in the consolation final against Kapa‘a at 9 a.m. The two KIF teams are winless in the tournament.
All of today’s games will be played in Waimea. Waianae doubled up on Kapa‘a yesterday, 10-5, Kaua‘i then edged the Warriors, 5-2, and at Hanapepe, Leilehua slammed Aiea, 10-5.
