Kaua‘i girls finish fourth at states
By Duane Shimogawa Jr. – The Garden Island
Led by Shelcie Takenouchi’s (81-78-159) sixth-place finish, the defending state champion Kaua‘i High School girls’ squad nailed down the fourth spot at the 2005 David S. Ishii Foundation/HH-SAA Girls State Golf Championships on Maui (The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course).
Waiakea’s Christine Kim won the individual state title with a 78-75-153 total. The top 15 golfers received medals and any ties from #2 through #15 were broken by matching cards from hole #1 on May 11.
Besides Takenouchi, Mary Akutagawa (88-78-166), who finished in 12th-place was the only other Red Raider to earn a medal.
Meanwhile, Kaua‘i’s Miki Ueoka (87-84-171), Terra Bell (85-86-171), Kimberly Yama (93-92-185), and Claire Hirota (91-95-186) rounded out the Red Raider scores.
The defending state champion Kaua‘i boys squad will also head to Maui, but at the Wailea Emerald Golf Course in its state title quest from May 17-18.
UH’s academics increases
The NCAA has released a final updated report of Academic Progress Rate (APR) that lists the University of Hawai‘i at 943, 13 points above the 930 score released in the NCAA’s preliminary report, Athletics Director Herman Frazier announced yesterday. The score ranks favorably among the average of all NCAA I-A programs (946).
“The good news is that we have improved our overall score of 930 that was released in the preliminary report,” Frazier said. “Although we do have some work to do in regards to of a few programs, I feel good about where we are as a department.”
The report is based only on the 2003-04 academic year. Four UH programs, including men’s volleyball, women’s golf and women’s tennis, and water polo, posted perfect scores of 1,000. Men’s basketball, which posted an 885 score in the preliminary report, improved to 941 in the current report.
“I am proud that four of our programs posted perfect scores,” Frazier said. “However, our mission is to provide opportunities and encourage all of our student-athletes to attain a high level of academic excellence. We will continue to meet with our coaches to evaluate our current procedures and put policies in place to help our student-athletes achieve their academic goals.”
Panoke paces the Hustlers
Andrew Panoke led his Kanuikapono Hustlers squad to a 38-36 win over Hanama‘ulu on Wednesday in boys 12-and-under KYBA action in Kilauea. Hank Ibia led Hanama‘ulu with 13 points.
On the girls’ side, Go Hard’s Kelsey Cadiente’s 20 points almost outscored the Lihu‘e Pacers, 33-22. Janessa Grady led the Pacers with eight points.
