It was a Kaua‘i-style story that happened half way around the world.
Even though the Kaua‘i members of the Hawaii Army National Guard Company A, 2nd Battalion, 299th Infantry, 29th Brigade Combat Team, are already pulling grueling, 12-hour shifts six days a week, they sacrificed even more, working extra shifts, so their brothers could participate in a three-day softball tournament recently.
The ones who got to play guaranteed victory at Camp Victory, in Baghdad, Iraq, and did not disappoint.
Playing against regular Army teams whose active-duty members have in the past been able to practice regularly, the Company A team, made up nearly entirely of Kaua‘i citizen-soldiers, emerged undefeated in the 13-team tourney.
Needless to say, the Kauaians’ morale was, and remains, sky high, a team member said.
“Morale is high, and we have pulled together as a team and company,” said 2nd Lt. Chad Daniels.
The championship medal is a symbol of how the members of Company A have incredible heart and ability, he said.
They have traveled a great distance to Iraq, are separated from family and friends, and continue to work hard and long hours, yet still seem able to go beyond the distance to greatness, he added.
“We promised our company victory,” Daniels said, and that’s exactly what they delivered.
