Gummerus gets lucky — on the course!

Former Kaua‘i High School basketball standout Dustin Gummerus got lucky at the Puakea Golf Course on Saturday, June 18. The Hanapepe resident nailed a hole-in-one on the 16th hole (105 yards), utilizing a pitching wedge.
Good friends Mike “Sully” Sullivan, Tom Refamonte, Arthur Chow “Mein,” and Levi Hirokane witnessed Dustin getting lucky (which wasn’t the first time)!
Gummerus, an avid golfer, was one of the best guards in KIF basketball history. Dustin has two brothers, Donovan and Chad (Mr. BMW), and one sister, Cathy.
Canoe paddling on ESPN
Outrigger canoe racing will be on ESPN as part of the network’s “SportsCenter Across America: 50 States in 50 Days Summer Tour.”
The telecast will include portions of the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association state championship on Maui, on Aug. 6. ESPN’s Neil Everett, a former KGMB sportscaster, will be one of the on-air broadcasters.
Yates all-state
Two-time KIF player of the year Kirby Yates earned first-team all-state honors, according to The Honolulu Advertiser.
Yates was one of two utility players selected on the prestigious team. The former Kaua‘i ace is now playing with the Hawai‘i Island Movers and will be heading off to Yavapai Community College in Arizona in the fall.
Kaua‘i Cowboys drop out of HFL
Due to uncontrollable circumstances, the Kaua‘i Cowboys semi-pro football squad have dropped out of the Hawai‘i Football League (HFL). The Cowboys finished its season with a 1-5 record and have no games remaining on their 2005 schedule.
Tai Hook Regatta on its way
On Saturday, June 25, Hanalei Bay will be the site of the Annual Henry Tai Hook Regatta, hosted by the Hanalei Canoe Club. Outrigger canoe clubs from across Kaua‘i will be competing in sprints, from a quarter-mile up to a mile and a half in distance. Children as young as eight, up to adults 55 years and older will gather for a day of fun and fellowship that has a history as old as Hawai‘i.
Henry Tai Hook was the inspiration and ancestor, not only of canoe racing in Hanalei, but of many of Kaua‘i’s paddlers. The Hanalei Canoe Club honors Henry, and all of the Tai Hooks, by hosting this yearly event.
This year will mark a special dedication before the actual regatta. Hanalei Canoe Club will dedicate this year’s Tai Hook Regatta to the memory of ‘Kachi’ Yokotake, lifelong supporter, paddler, and coach in Hanalei. The Hanalei Canoe Club, family, and friends of Kachi are welcome to gather at 8 a.m., before the regatta, to paddle out into Hanalei Bay to scatter flowers on the ocean to remember Kachi and his contributions to our club and the community. The regatta will begin immediately afterwards.
Koloa Plantation Days Rodeo coming up
The annual Koloa Plantation Days Rodeo is looking for participants. The Kaua‘i Rodeo Club- sponsored event happens at CJM Country Stables from July 30-31. Entry deadline is July 20 and if you need more information, contact Joyce “Juice” Miranda at 652-9324.
