Kaua‘i Channel Race set for July 14
By The Garden Island
The Nawiliwili Yacht Club is teaming up with Ko Olina Marina again for another exciting channel race from Ko Olina, O‘ahu to Nawiliwili, Kaua‘i. The 78-mile race will start at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 14. Everyone in Hawai‘i who has a sailboat of any type over 20′ LOA is invited to participate.
There will be separate classes for Monohulls and Multihulls with 1st to finish, and corrected time awards for each.
This year the HYRA PHRF and Club handicap system plus time on time scoring will be used. The Kaua‘i Channel Race 2005 is a great race for cruising sailors as well as racers.
Last year the crew on board Kalewa set the spinnaker at the start; they had a few hours of light air reaching followed by an exciting screaming, surfing reach across the channel at 16 to 23 knots with one jibe to the finish. This year’s race will be just as exciting.
Starting at 6 p.m. racers will have a couple hours to work down the west side of Oahu, enjoy the sunset and then settle in for a beautiful night of sailing across the Kaua’i Channel.
Notice of Race and Entry forms are available on the web at http://www.kauaichannelrace.com. The entry fee is $80 for all participants who have registered by June 15th. Registration is open until June 30th with an additional charge of $50. The awards ceremony and party will take place on Saturday, July 16th at the Nawiliwili Yacht Club located in the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor. There will be a catered dinner and live music by the popular Tongue & Groove Band. Premium draft beer is being donated by Keoki Brewing Company.
Tickets are limited so call now to make reservations. Contact the Nawiliwili Yacht Club at 808-742-2512. Additional information can also be found at http://www.nawiliwiliyachtclub.org/.
